FA chief's rare pen set going up for auction
A rare pen presentation set that belonged to the a president of the Football Association of Wales will go under the hammer.
The set, issued by football governing body Uefa, was owned by Tegwyn Evans, from Welshpool, whose death in October last year led to tributes from football clubs across Wales and Shropshire
It will be sold by Cuttlsetones in Wolverhampton on Friday. The pen set will go under the hammer alongside a host of other football memorabilia during the sale.
The 18ct gold fountain and ball point pen set, presented in a fitted hardwood case, bears an inscription marking UEFA's 50th anniversary and carries a guide price of £200 to £400.
However, Cuttlestones' saleroom manager Tom Waldron believes the item could fetch a lot more due to its rarity.
Mr Evans was a former Welshpool mayor and president of the FAW, who died aged 85.
Mr Waldron said: "This is a pretty unique lot in a number of ways. First of all, these are limited edition items that were gifted to various officials and dignitaries at specialist UEFA events. Secondly, this particular set was purchased by the vendor from the estate of the late Tegwyn Evans.
"Tegwyn was a true ambassador of Welsh football so fans of the game in Wales are likely to have a keen eye on this piece, along with collectors of international football memorabilia."
Another addition to the sale catalogue which is likely to pique the interest of Welsh football fans is a 14ct gold and blue enamel medal of The FAW, with the engraving "Amateur Cup Winners 1935-36 Llay Welfare FC", which has a guide price of £250 to £350.
Mr Evans was known as "Mr Welshpool"and was a director of the Welshpool Printing Company for 33 years until his retirement in 1993.
In 1980 he was made a bard by the Powys International Eisteddfod. He was made a life president of the FAW and awarded an MBE for his exceptional community service.
He was also a lifelong supporter and president of Welshpool Town Football Club.
