Giant V Festival clean-up begins at Weston Park

Clearing up the V Festival campsite is an unenviable task – but more than 500 volunteers made it their mission.

For the last seven years, Brewood Rotary Club has cleaned and cleared the Weston Park campsites used by tens of thousands of people over weekend.

The club salvages as much re-usable camping equipment as possible and puts it to good use.

Founding member Keith Gator said: "We take as many tents, sleeping bags and as much camping equipment as we physically can then load it into a lorry provided by our partners International Aid Trust Preston.

"They then restore what we have collected and distribute it out for various humanitarian causes.

"The field has to be back to normal by next Saturday so we go in straight away to get the best equipment possible before it gets turned into landfill."

The first Brewood Rotary Club clean-up was undertaken by just five members of the group, who collected 100 tents between them. Last year, 500 volunteers managed to collect a total of 5,000 tents in the two days they are allowed on site.

Mr Gator said: "A group of friends will volunteer one year and then the following year they have brought their friends along. We have 500 confirmed volunteers on board before we start but I know there will be more.

"We are building our own unique history and we all have a good time."
