Driver failed to recall double fatal accident, court told

A driver said he "could not remember" a crash with a motorcycle which led to the death of a husband and wife, a court heard.

David Cox broke down in tears several times at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday as excerpts of his police interview were read out to the jury.

The 49-year-old was driving a Vauxhall Astra which veered across the A458 Shrewsbury to Welshpool road on April 21 last year, colliding with a Yamaha motorbike.

Rider Kevin Byrne, 48, and his passenger, wife Carol, 49, from Rhayader, Powys, were both killed in the crash.

They had been travelling towards Welshpool after a motorcycle rally.

Cox's car was had travelling in the opposite direction and was in collision with the motorcycle on a right hand bend on the A458 at Rowton, near Halfway House.

In the interview with police he said: "I am just driving along the road, my mum offered me a lozenge. She unwrapped it for me and put it in my mouth.

"I carried on driving and all of a sudden I started coughing. I don't know whether it was the sweet or whether it was a cough, it was like something stuck in my throat.

"The next thing I remember is being told to get out of my car."

Cox, from Atherstone in Warwickshire, denies two charges of causing death by careless driving.

The trial continues.
