Police officers tweeted this picture outside Spiceland in Market Street, Wellington, yesterday afternoon before informing Severn Trent of the problem.

The gusher did eventually slow down to a trickle before repair men from Severn Trent arrived to stop it completely.

Severn Trent spokeswoman Sarah Jayne O'Kane said: "It did look quite exciting – it was caused by a leaking stop tap.

"Our team has been out in Market Street to carry out repair work. It was completed by around 2.30pm. There hasn't been any damage to the shop.

"We would like to say thanks to West Mercia Police for reporting the leak. We would like to say sorry to the local community for any effect it might have had on them. We had a team out there quickly."
