Southwater pub is named in competition

A new pub opening in Telford's multi-million pound Southwater development is set to be named after a local folklore legend.

The pub will be called The Wrekin Giant, after owners the Hungry Horse pub group ran a competition it to be named by people in the town.

The pub, which will be inside the £250 million Southwater Square development, is set to create around 45 full and part-time jobs when it opens in October.

Last month Hungry Horse asked residents what they would like the new pub to be called and more that 80 suggestions were received, ranging from the Iron Horse to the Southwater Arms. The winning moniker, however, was chosen after being suggested by a number of people.

One was Julie Day, from Posenhall near Broseley, who also won a £150 gift voucher, which can be used in The Wrekin Giant.

Legend has it that Welsh giant "Grendol" took offence at the town of Shrewsbury and its inhabitants and decided to dam the River Severn and flood the town. A chance meeting with a Wellington-based cobbler, Tollenwing saw him put off the idea. He then trudged back to Wales, dropping the soil from his shovel and creating the Wrekin.

Matt Brown, business unit director for Hungry Horse, said: "I'd like to thank everyone who sent in their suggestions to us. We wanted to ensure our name reflects the local area, which is why we wanted it to be decided by our future customers. We are really pleased with the name and are very excited to get the doors of the Wreckin Giant open and bring our fun, great value and family friendly pub to the shopping centre."
