Newport's Madam Pigott shuns date with ghost club
She's a spook spotted by people travelling along a main road outside Newport for hundreds of years.
But Madam Pigott failed to appear for a group of ghost hunters when they did a stake-out.
The West Midlands Ghost Club pitched up on Chetwynd Road in a bid to capture proof of the elusive spectre once and for all.
But after analysing recordings made on August 22 the group says has no conclusive proof from the other side.
Nick Duffy, of the group, said: "We didn't see anything ourselves, but you can't have everything, can you?
"Still, a lovely night was had by the group members present and we are hoping this may possibly attract word of further sightings as we progress with the research."
The group decided on the night-time vigil after receiving numerous reports of sightings from Newport residents.
Madam Pigott is said to dwell in the surroundings of the A41 between Newport and Market Drayton. She has been photographed previously at Chetwynd Church where she has been seen glowing in a white dress and holding a baby.
The group has been calling for people to come forward with their own ghostly experiences involving the spectre.
Mr Duffy said: "A couple of people wrote to the club to say that they had seen what they took to be the apparition of Madam Pigott on the Chetwynd Road – one near the small lodge, frequently referred to as Madam Pigott's house for some reason, and another on the same road, but further towards Newport, level with the lake in the Deer Park.
"The latter mentioned a motif that was slightly different to usual sightings of the ghost, insomuch as this apparition was said to be very 'feral looking' and untidy or unkempt in appearance."
Madam Pigott was the wife of Squire Pigott and lived with him at the Chetwynd Park Estate. Her husband left her to tend to the estate alone while he took business trips to meet other women. Madam Pigott is said to have cursed her unfaithful husband with her dying breath, and as if in response, the child died as well.
The last major sighting of the ghost was in February, when one ghost hunter managed to capture a photograph of what they believed to be the mournful spirit.
