Shropshire hospital helipad lights improved as part of £100,000 donation

Improved lighting at the helipad used by the air ambulance at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital will be switched on for the first time next week.

It comes after a donation from the Help (Helicopter Emergency Landing Pads) Appeal.

The Help Appeal also helped improve the lighting at the helipad at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

A total of £100,000 was donated by the appeal for the two lighting projects.

Due to be operational from Monday, the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital helipad upgrade will allow larger air ambulances to land and will also lead to improved lighting around the helipad.

Robert Bertram, chief executive at the Help Appeal, said: "

The installation of lighting at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospitals' helipads will allow night flights to take place.

"Helicopter transfers after dark are usually transfers of patients who suddenly need critical care that cannot be provided where they are or transfers from A&E departments to a major trauma centre."

Since its creation, the appeal has provided funding to improve helipad facilities at 11 hospitals across England.
