Firefighters were called to a HGV on the Crossways Industrial Estate, Craven Arms, late on Tuesday evening, where a potential disaster was narrowly averted, a fire chief said.
Smoke began pouring out of the back of the lorry trailer at about 10.05pm.
Jason Norgrove, watch manager at Craven Arms, said: "The lorry was loaded with 26 tonnes of iron filings and when they were loaded they were still quite warm coming out of the factory.
"With a bit of time they obviously heated up and there was smoke from the hot material coming from the back of the trailer.
The lorry was made safe by about 11.55pm."
