A road on the Shropshire border was blocked this morning after a tree came down.

The fallen tree on the A488 in Knighton blocked the road at Woodhouse Lane, between Leintwardine and Llandrindod Wells, from about 7am.

This afternoon the A442 in Bridgnorth was partially blocking the road at Pendlestone.

Fallen power cables on the Mucklestone Road in in Loggerheads closed the road between Mucklestone Wood Lane and the A53 in Market Drayton.

In Telford a small tree came down across a back garden of a house in Heath Hill, Dawley.

High winds today forced staff to close Chirk Castle and the surrounding estate near Wrexham.

A spokesman said: " Apologies for any inconvenience, we will be open as normal on Wednesday."

It happened as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo brought high winds and rain to the UK.

High winds were expected to hit Shropshire, with residents urged to take care close to trees, fences and loose slates.

The winds are expected to be the strongest of autumn so far reaching up to 60mph.

A spokesman for Weather Consultancy Services said: "Wind direction will become north-westerly, with gusts of 50 to 60mph. Similar wind speeds will continue this afternoon.

"Minor damage is possible, and with many trees still in leaf, branches may be broken and so care must be taken close to trees. Loose slates and fence panels may also be damaged."

Winds will remain at similar speeds during this evenings busy travel period from 3pm to 7pm and feeling colder through the day as temperatures fall during the day with the arrival of polar air.

Gusts of up to 75mph in coastal areas and 65mph elsewhere inland were set to tear across much of the country bringing disruption to many areas, particularly to those needing to travel.

Heathrow Airport said 10% of flights with the 20 biggest carriers into and out of the London airport would be cancelled.
