Shropshire MP demands inquiry on PM attack
Shropshire MP Mark Pritchard has demanded an inquiry into how a member of the public was able to run into the Prime Minister and his protection team.
Jogger Dean Farley denied he had spotted the Prime Minister before the collision but questioned the efficiency of Mr Cameron's security team if he had managed to get close to him so easily outside Leeds Civic Hall, where the PM had been speaking at an event.
The Met's specialist protection command is responsible for Mr Cameron's security and Scotland Yard said it would carry out a review in consultation with West Yorkshire Police. But Wrekin MP Mr Pritchard said a review did not go far enough.
He said: "The Met Police have some of the best close protection officers in the world. However, this was a clear breach of security and could have been far more sinister in outcome. With the terror threat level increased, this cannot be allowed to happen again. The Met Commissioner should call an immediate and swift internal inquiry to discover why this happened and implement the necessary lessons learned."
A Met spokesman said the 28-year-old man was arrested by local officers and later released.
Mr Cameron later insisted he has confidence in his police bodyguards.
He told the Commons yesterday afternoon of the "debt I owe to the close protection teams that look after me and the very good job that they do".
