Police action on Shrewsbury railway bridge car crash

A man was arrested by police under suspicion of driving while unfit from drink or drugs after a car crash in Shrewsbury which saw an elderly couple in their 80s airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

The 45-year-old man has since been de-arrested because police say he is unfit to be under arrest and is in hospital.

The couple had to be cut out of their car by firefighters after the crash n Baschurch Road, Bomere Heath, on Monday.

The pair were airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital with serious chest and pelvic injuries, but are now in a stable condition. The road was closed for a number of hours while the scene was cleared.

Trains between Shrewsbury and Gobowen were disrupted until noon because of some damage caused to the railway bridge by the collision.
