Man arrested after car hits garden wall in Telford
A man in his mid-40s was arrested by police after a driver smashed into the garden wall of a Telford home before fleeing the scene.
Pensioner Mary Davis, of Holyhead Road in Oakengates, was woken with a jolt in the early hours after the car left the road and came to rest just inches away from her front door.
The collision wrenched her gate off its hinges, cracked paving slabs and left loose bricks everywhere from the wall. Miraculously no-one was hurt and the driver fled the wreckage of the car.
Inspector Ben Smith, of West Mercia Police, confirmed a man had been arrested away from the scene of the accident a short time after it happened, early yesterday. He said he was taken into custody after providing a positive reading on a roadside breath test.
Anyone with information is urged to call West Mercia Police on 101 number.
A pensioner today told of her shock after being woken by a car smashing through her garden wall and stopping just inches from her front door.
Ms Davis, 69, said it was a miracle no-one had been hurt after the car left the road in Oakengates in the early hours of Sunday and smashed through the wall.
Police believe the car had been in collision with another vehicle further up the street in Holyhead Road before losing control and hitting the wall.
Ms Davis was at home and had her partner Reg and four-year-old grandson staying over for the night.
She said: "I was asleep, my partner stayed last night. I didn't realise he had got out of bed to go to the bathroom.
"All of a sudden I heard this bang and I thought 'what the hell was that?'
"I thought my partner had fallen down the stairs or something, but then he came back into the bedroom and asked me what the bang was.
"So I got up and looked out of my window and there was this car embedded in my wall.
"I'm just glad no-one was hurt and that it didn't hit the house. You hear of cars exploding in crashes, with the petrol in them."
