Crews from Wellington freed the man, believed to be in his 80s, from the garden outside his home in Holyhead Road just before lunchtime yesterday.

Watch manager Craig Jackson said it was believed the man had been trimming the hedge in his front garden when he became lodged in the mud.

"His wife called, she was quite distressed because she was unable to do anything about it," he said.

"He didn't realise quite how muddy his garden was. We took them both in the house and made them a cup of tea, because it was quite cold and they were both shaken by what happened.

"The wheelchair was also very muddy, so we washed it down before putting it in the house."
