Hundreds of new street lights being installed in Walsall
A £250,000 project to replace hundreds of street lights in Walsall is launching this week.
Around 550 old-style sodium lanterns in the St Matthews, Pleck and Palfrey areas will be replaced with energy efficient LED lights.
It is the latest phase of the council's 'Invest to Save' scheme.
Lights have already been replaced by Walsall Council in Bloxwich, Leamore and Brownhills at a total cost of £750k.
LED lights are proven to use less electricity, emit better light and require less maintenance, as well as reduce the authority's carbon footprint.
Councillor Lee Jeavons, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: "With this latest phase, the council has invested around £1m into its Invest to Save initiative. We've seen rise after rise in energy bills so this investment makes good sense.
"LED street lights not only offer exceptional lighting with substantial energy savings but they also last longer which will help to reduce the cost of operation."
