Officers said deliberate arson has been ruled out over the fire which broke out in the woman's home in Saxon Court, Leegomery.
The fire started in the back of the house in the early hours of Saturday and neighbours tried to free the woman, who is in her 80s, but were forced back because of thick smoke.
Fire crews forced entry helping her out of the home and she was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford in a serious condition suffering from smoke inhalation.
