Suzy the shih tzu, who belonged to Rita Mansell of Oakengates, in Telford, had starred in the national touring production of Annie for eight years, appearing alongside Su Pollard and Ruth Madoc.

Only last year Suzy appeared alongside Mrs Mansell's other dog Danny in performances of the hit musical in Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

They also appeared in shows in Manchester, Leeds, Londonderry and Dublin.

Danny first appeared in Annie 12 years ago, after Mrs Mansell took him for an audition in London.

Mrs Mansell said she decided to audition Danny for the role after losing her husband Harry, and the 13-year-old wheaten terrier has now made more than 1,400 appearances in the musical — placing him in the Guinness Book of World Records for appearing in more performances than any other dog.

Suzy made her first appearance in the show around eight years ago, and Mrs Mansell said Ruth Madoc really took her to her heart.
