Jenny Davies, headteacher of Meole Brace Primary School and Nursery in Shrewsbury, has advised that children should not be allowed to walk to and from school alone.

It comes after a police community support officer sent a text message to the school about a man who had been spotted in the area, and officers have pledged to step up patrols.

Reports have also been received of people trying car door handles or attempting to break into houses in the area.

The man spotted near the school has been described as being white and possibly of Eastern European origin. He is of average height with a muscular build and aged between 30 and 40. He was said to be wearing a dark zip-up hoody and tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

In her letter, Mrs Davies said although there had been no incident reported, she said it was important parents remained safety-conscious. The school has about 350 pupils aged three to 11.

Speaking to the Shropshire Star, Mrs Davies said: "I had a meeting with two community support officers on Monday who came to the school to raise their concerns and this was detailed in my letter."

Sergeant Tanya Grey, of West Mercia Police, said: "We have had some reports of a suspicious man in the vicinity of Meole Brace Primary School. We do not believe there is any real cause for concern at present but it is something we take seriously."

Anyone who has seen anything suspicious in the area should contact police on 101.
