Alex Edwards, 24, had told police he felt "ashamed with himself" when he was interviewed after the incident.

His solicitor said she would "rather be smacked than spat at."

Edwards pleaded guilty to one charge of assault by beating at Telford Magistrates Court.

He was sentenced to three months in prison but had already been in custody since October 20 – time that would be included in the sentence.

Prosecuting, Miss Abigail Hall, said that Edwards had been involved in an on-off relationship with the victim for seven years, however, they had separated before the incident on September 20.

Edwards had been living with his brother, but had moved back in with his ex in Gobowen after his brother had lost his accommodation.

The court was told that accounts of what sparked the row differed.

Miss Hall said that the row had escalated and Edwards had begun calling her names and had spat at her.

The court was told Edwards, of Garth Glyn Ceiriog, Llangollen, had 14 convictions for 20 offences and that the assault put him in breach of a conditional discharge and a community order.

Miss Ceri Lewis, for Edwards, said that her client had been in custody since October 20 for breaching bail conditions.

She said: "He has dealt with it very constructively. This is probably the best Mr Edwards has looked in the five years I have represented him."

Miss Lewis added that her client had come off drugs.

Edwards must also pay £80 prosecution costs and a £85 victim surcharge. He must continue with his community order and work with the probation service.
