Telford man who headbutted ex-girlfriend avoids jail term
A 22-year-old Telford man who grabbed his former girlfriend by the ears and headbutted her before assaulting her mother has been spared an immediate prison sentence.
Daniel Hinton also made a threatening phone call to his former girlfriend, with whom he had had a long-standing relationship.
At an earlier hearing at Telford magistrates court, he admitted two charges of causing actual bodily harm and one of sending threatening texts.
Yesterday, at Shrewsbury Crown Court, he was given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
Recorder Graham Huston also ordered him to undergo 18 months supervision and attend a better relationships programme.
He also imposed a restraining order to stop Hinton approaching the women.
Mr Huston said Hinton, of Hills Lane Drive, Madeley, had been a bully and someone who hit out when things did not go his way. But he said his behaviour had been totally out of character and he could see that he was totally ashamed of his behaviour.
Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said that when Hinton feared his long-term girlfriend was seeing someone else he had rowed with her, grabbed her and headbutted her.
Later he made a threatening phone call, shortly afterwards going round to an address in Sutton Hill where he assaulted his former girlfriend's mother.
Mr Edwards said that the prosecution maintained that Hinton banged the woman's head against the concrete floor although Hinton pleaded guilty on the basis he pushed her away and she fell hitting her head on concrete.
Mr Daniel White for Hinton said his client had no previous convictions and his behaviour had been totally out of character.
"He is otherwise a decent young man who works hard," he said.
