Experts called as Shropshire tap water turns brown

Water coming from taps in a part of Shropshire turned brown, prompting an investigation by engineers.

Experts from Severn Trent were called out to the Meole Brace area of Shrewsbury after residents reported discoloured water at their homes.

Sarah McArthur, of Severn Trent, said: "We're getting in touch with our customers in Meole Brace and our teams are out on site, investigating and taking samples."

The problem has been linked to the latest problem with a burst water main on Roman Road. Businesses were flooded for the second time in two weeks because of the burst, which happened at about 8am on Sunday and left homes without water for about two hours. A previous incident happened in the same area on December 14.

Ms McArthur said the water was safe to drink. "We've been moving water around the system in a different direction because of the burst water pipe on Roman Road.

"Discolouration is usually caused by the disturbance of mains sediments and deposits that accumulate over time at the bottom of our water pipes. Although unappealing, we have no reason to believe there is any risk to your health."

The firm has apologised and has asked people to turn on the first mains-fed cold water tap in the house, which is usually at the kitchen sink, at a gentle rate for up to 20 minutes. If the supply is not clear, the process should be repeated.

It isn't the first time water supplies in Shropshire have turned brown. In February, residents in Muxton and Donnington in Telford reported dirty tap water.
