The dead man, who was thought to have lived locally and aged in his late 50s, was taken ill in Station Hill, Oakengates last night.

Paramedics were called at about 6.10pm after the man was found on the pavement with head injuries.

But there was nothing they could do and he was declared at Princess Royal Hospital less than an hour later.

A passer-by, who asked not to be named, said he was driving past in his car when he was flagged down by three people who were trying to help.

"I tried to give him CPR, but it was too late, there was nothing I could do," he said.

"He was lying on the floor, he was wearing good-quality clothing. There were a lot of people around, and he looked to have been walking up the hill."

Police cordoned off the street while they carried out investigations.

Inspector Andy Smith from Telford police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

He said: "We had a report of a male being found in the street.

Sadly it looked like he was deceased by the time paramedics got to him.

There is nothing to indicate any suspicious activity or third party involvement in the death, but if anyone saw him in the area earlier in the evening we would like to speak to them.

"We believe we have identified the man and we're trying to locate his next of kin."

Formal identification is yet to take place and the coroner will be informed of the death today.

Anyone who thinks they saw the man earlier in the evening is asked to contact Telford police on 101.
