Cars targeted by thieves on cold mornings, police warn

Motorists are being warned not to leave their vehicles unattended with their engines running during cold mornings.

A number of cars have been targeted by thieves who pounce on vehicles that are being warmed up.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Davies, of West Mercia Police, said: "We are urging people not to make their car a target for thieves by leaving the keys in the engine whilst the car is unattended. It is easy to forget, especially on cold mornings when de-icing the car, but even leaving the car for just a short time could make it easy pickings.

"Often insurance companies will not cover drivers who have left the keys in their vehicles.

"Although there have been no recent incidents in Shropshire when cars have been stolen in this manner, there have been a handful of incidents across the West Mercia Force area since the cold weather began.

"We ask people take extra care to supervise their car."
