Western Power Distribution has spent 10 months replacing equipment at a substation in Ironbridge.

About 11 kilometres of 33,000 volt cables have been laid to connect the substation to another station in Halesfield.

The cables now also run past the substation at Madeley to make it easier for further work to be carried out in the future.

Melvyn Holmes, Weston Power Distribution team manager, said the work would help safeguard supplies and reliability to about 21,500 customers in the Ironbridge area.

He said the investment is also designed to accommodate increased demand on the power network if any future developments took place.

The project, which started in February, is expected to be complete by the end of January.

Traffic management has been in place over the last 10 months to enable contractors Morgan Sindall to lay the cables.

Stella Hayward, of Western Power Distribution, added: "The work has seen the cable run past Madeley to make it easier for any future work to be carried out.

"The cabling work has been carried out in anticipation of more work taking place at some point but there are presently no specific jobs in the pipeline."

Telford's electricity network underwent a £2.5 million overhaul two years ago. The work included laying 27 kilometres of cables to carry 33,000 volts of power between Ketley and Snedshill.
