Rare record a windfall for Shrewsbury charity shop
A vinyl record worth hundreds of pounds has been donated to a Shrewsbury charity shop.
The Oxfam bookshop in Dogpole, Shrewsbury, was given a donation of old records, and amongst the records was a rare first pressing copy of Deep Purple's July 1968 debut album Shades of Deep Purple.
After noticing the markings on the record, shop manager Tim Cotton did some research and realised he had quite a valuable record in his hands.
"The version of the record we have here is in excellent condition, and we have priced it at £350 to £500," he said.
"In mint condition this is worth upwards of £600. It has a yellow and black label on the record and is in mono – and those two traits mean that it is a first pressing."
A first pressing with a black/yellow label is rare because the label was changed very soon after release.
The collection of vinyl also contained records such as The Hollies' 1966 release For Certain Because, valued at around £30.
Mr Cotton said: "I am sure anyone who collects will be interested to at least come and have a look at this record."
