Nick Allbutt, from Telford, started working for West Mercia Police when he left school at the age of 18 and has spent the past seven years working as part of Shifnal and Albrighton's safer neighbourhood team.

The 53-year-old father retired on New Year's Eve. He will continue to work for a school in Telford as a behaviour officer, but said he had loved every minute of working for the police.

Mr Allbutt decided to join the police after a neighbour, who was a sergeant, gave him the low down about the job – and the rest is history.

"I am going to miss it, it would be a lie if I said I wasn't going to but I am looking forward to not working shifts anymore," he said. "It also means that I can spend some more time with my family."
