The January Jog event in Newport attracted more than 150 people who took part in an off-road 5km senior race for runners over 13 and dozens more then joined in with a 2.5km fun run in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The competitors were cheered on at Shuker Field by Newport Mayor, Councillor Tony Forrester, who said the event was a superb way to start the year,

He said: "I have attended this event now for the past three years to lend my support to those joining in which includes my mayoral colleague from Market Drayton, Councillor Tim Beckett.

"It is always an absolute pleasure to see so many people so enthusiastic and coming along and lending their support."

Paul Quinn, one of the organisers, runs The Phez public house in the town, which donated the £50 first prizes for the men and ladies 5km. Mark Dalkins, of Wrekin Road Runners, won with a time of just over 16 minutes.

The first female runner was Claire Martin, of Telford Athletic Club, who came in two minutes later and was sixth overall.

Making their first appearance at the January Jog was also Newport band Fine Mess, whose members Haydn Saycel, singer Jack Pierce, Sam Watson and Alex Massey provided entertainment throughout the day.

Ian Kevan, another organiser, said he was delighted with how the event had gone.

He said: "It is a brilliant event. It always is and we are very grateful that so many people continue to support us so well.

"There were more than 150 people involved in the 5km race, both men and women and it seemed to go really well."

He added: "There were some really good prizes on offer including cash prizes and clothing donated by our sponsors."

Julie Evans, 34, from Newport, turned out to watch the event with her family.

She said: "I am here to cheer those who are on because they are doing ever so well.

"I am hoping they can raise a lot of money for the charity."

Paul Rowlands, 27, was taking part in the fun run. He added: "Maybe next year I will do the full thing."
