Four car crash closes Shropshire's busy A5 during rush hour

A crash involving four cars and a motorbike on the A5 closed the road during rush hour traffic and caused tailbacks on the M54 this morning.

The crash happened at 6am between Junction 7 at Wellington an the Preston Boats Island at Shrewsbury on the Westbound carriageway heading away from Telford.

Police were on the scene moving the vehicles and cars were also seen heading the wrong way up the carriageway to get away from the traffic.

Routes are diverted along the old A5 at Junction 7 towards Shrewsbury, but delays are expected due to the high volume of traffic.

Fire crews were called to clear up fuel spillage and the West Midlands Ambulance Service was also on hand.

West Mercia Police said a Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen and Corsa were involved in the crash.

The motorcyclist, a man believed to be in his forties, suffered leg injuries and has been taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Another driver, a man in his twenties was treated at the scene for minor injuries but did not need to be taken to hospital.
The Highways Agency say the road reopened shortly after 8.30am.

A further crash happened on the A442 in Sutton Maddock near Telford at about 8am and saw a silver Peugout and silver Ford KA collide, blocking the road.

Police have said no one was injured but the road was blocked until 8.40am while recovery work took place.

This road has also reopened.
