Exciting defence developments for Shropshire, says shadow secretary on visit
Shropshire is at the centre of "exciting" defence developments the Shadow Defence Secretary said on a visit to the county.
Vernon Coaker MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, said the looming decision on whether Telford will become a flagship centre for supplying kit to the armed forces was an "important" one.
And he said the sale of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury spelled an "exciting" time for residents who he hoped would reap community benefits from its future use.
Mr Coaker visited Territorial Army C Squadron 202 Field Hospital at the barracks and the Regimental Museum at Shrewsbury Castle yesterday.
He also met with representatives from ABF - the Soldier's Charity while being hosted by Laura Davies, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Shrewsbury & Atcham.
Mr Coaker said: "The museum was great. It's an amazing collection. The curator showed us around and it was really interesting to see some of the medals being polished. I was really in awe.
"I met with the West Midlands representative of ABF who talked about the work the fundraising and the fact that the charity has helped about 70 individuals in Shropshire. It's great to have an organisation to raise money and help individuals who have served their country and fallen on difficult times.
"Everyone is proud of what our armed forces do so it's important that is recognised in Shropshire."
He added: "I am aware that the Copthorne Barracks are up for sale and I hope the council will work with the MoD and engage with residents to find something that is of major benefit to the community."
