The team at Fordhall Organic Farm, near Market Drayton, kicked off the year with the ancient tradition of wassailing which saw people from around the area come to bless the trees in a historic Saxon event.

Youngsters and their parents began by making rattles out of recycled bottles, toilet rolls and chick peas before

King of the Wassail, volunteer Alan Howe, gave a talk about the history of wassailing.

Charlotte Hollins, manager of the community trust which owns the farm, said: "It was a lovely afternoon.

In an age when agriculture is so centralised it is refreshing to go back to these traditional ceremonies.

"It reminds us of a time when communities would come together to bring in the new year, hoping for a good harvest."
