A year ago Llanfyllin's Lonely Tree was lying on the floor, battered by storms and with its future uncertain.

But a year later, with its roots still clinging on to the Mid Wales hillside, the tree is now in the running to become the European Tree of the Year 2015 and people are being urged to support its bid.

The old Scots Pine has played a large part in community life for about 200 years as a place for celebration, for proposing marriage or scattering ashes.

The tree was named the Welsh Tree of the Year 2014 and this month the tree is in the running for the 2015 European Tree of the Year Competition, with winners of national contests competing to take the title.

Welsh environmentalist Iolo Williams will be visiting the Lonely Tree at 11am on Sunday to unveil a stone plaque.
