A fresh blast is expected to plunge Britain deeper into the winter's icy grip later this week, with the promise of snow in some parts and sub-zero temperatures everywhere.

But forecasters today said that the clear skies over Shropshire will bring with them bitter temperatures, aided by a northerly wind.

Shropshire and Mid Wales is expected to miss any big snowfalls, instead experiencing the odd shower in weather that is otherwise bright.

Clear skies will take temperatures down as far as -4C (25F) in rural parts of the region at night over the next five days and daytime temperatures are likely to struggle to around 6C (43F) in the day.

Simon Partridge, a forecaster with the Met Office, said: "There will be some cool air coming from central Europe and Scandinavia. You can really say there will be a bite in the air this week."
