Shropshire pair tackle 90-day walk to Africa
They look comfortable now – but these two friends are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime, which will see them walk 1,400 miles to Africa.
Corey Martin and Charles MacDonald-Jones, of Newport, have set off on a 90-day trip from London to the Moroccan city of Tangier.
The two former Adams' Grammar School pupils will be raising money for Cancer Research UK and Baraka Community Partnerships – a charity which works to support disadvantaged communities with a number of projects in Morocco, Zambia, Laos and India.
Their journey began yesterday, from where they were trekking to Portsmouth to catch a ferry on their journey, arriving at the French city of Saint-Malo.
For the first leg of this part of the walk Corey, 23, and Charles, 22, will travel south along the Chemin de Mont-Saint-Michel as it winds through Nantes and joins the Chemin de Paris et de Tours, passing through Bordeux to St Jean Pied de Port, the last French town on the Camino de Santiago. Once there, they will join the well-trodden Camino Frances.
From Madrid they will head south to Andalusia, eventually finding the small coastal town of Tarifa. A second ferry will then take them across the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier, which they aim to reach by the end of April. Mr Martin said:
"We will survive on nothing more than what we can carry on our backs or pick up along the way and we will be camping for the majority of the trip."
