Call issued for volunteers to join Shropshire First Responders

They are the volunteers who can make the difference between life and death, especially in isolated rural areas.

And today a drive was launched for more people to come forward to help Shropshire First Responders.

The responders are all volunteers and give up their own time to help people who need emergency medical treatment. They are able to help someone suffering from a cardiac arrest or stroke within minutes of them calling for an ambulance.

But the group say they need the support of the public so they can continue their life-saving work.

The First Responders are not funded by the NHS and rely on fundraising and donations to keep their vehicles on the road.

Angie Evan, who is one of the Telford community responders, said: "I always say to people that we need you but hopefully you won't need us. We are always grateful for any help anyone can give us."

If people are interested in volunteering they can do so if they are over the age of 18 and have a current driving licence.

Once someone has shown they are physically fit and gone through the correct training, which is provided, they are then asked to give up fours a week. All the training is provided by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

A fundraising cabaret evening will be held at Whitchurch Civic Centre on February 21. It will run from 7pm to 1am and tickets, which can be booked by calling (01939) 200212, are £15 for adults and £10 for under 16s.
