Liam Thomas Riggs, 21, was spotted by a witness standing by the driver's side of the vehicle but ran from the scene, later telling police that they could not prove he had been driving, magistrates at Telford heard.

Riggs was given a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for more than two years.

Mr Adam Warner, prosecuting, said the crash had occurred in the early hours of January 25 when the Audi had crashed into a lamppost and fence in Stirchley Avenue, Randlay.

Riggs was arrested as he ran from the scene and was abusive to officers, later refusing to provide two breath samples at Malinsgate police station.

Riggs, of Chirbury in Stirchley, admitted the charge of failing to provide a specimen when he appeared in court yesterday.

He also admitted being in breach of a two-year conditional discharge for a public order offence.

Riggs was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and a 12-week curfew to remain at home between the hours of 5pm and 5am.
