Action urged over Newport crossing

A councillor is pushing for action over a crossing where residents say using it is like an "accident waiting to happen".

It is hoped improvements can be made to the pedestrian crossing outside Newport's Waitrose supermarket in Audley Road at the same time as roadworks are carried.

Telford & Wrekin Councillor Eric Carter

said: "I have been contacted by people who live in Powell Place and there is a lot of people there who are young and have children. They are finding people are not stopping at the crossing with cars racing through to make the lights further down.

"It looks like Audley Road will be completely resurfaced so it would make sense to upgrade the crossing system to make it safer to use when that work is being done sometime between April and August.

"At the moment the white marks on the crossing are poorly marked."

He said a speed indicator device which shows when people are driving faster than the 30mph limit should also be installed in the approach to the crossing.

Audley Road is one of a number in Newport set to benefit from improvement works in the next year. They have been earmarked as part of Telford & Wrekin Council's highway capital maintenance programme.
