Shropshire farmer's good practice helped save part of barn engulfed in blaze

Firefighters say good farm practices stopped an entire barn being destroyed by fire.

A quarter of the building, measuring 30m by 30m, was left in ruins following the fire in Hogstow, near Minsterley. Up to 100 cows were moved to safety from another section of the barn as the fire took hold of the building, which also destroyed 80 tonnes of straw.

Firefighters battled through the night to bring the fire under control. But Shaun Baker, station manager at Minsterley, said: "The fact the farmer separated his straw from his fertiliser is what saved the entire barn from going up.

"We always encourage good practice for farmers on the off chance something like this happens.

"The space between the two was big enough to ensure the fire did not spread."
