Scare for driver as old fridges thrown onto Shropshire road from van

It looks like an invasion of alien pods landing on a Shropshire road. But it is actually a line of fridges which were fly-tipped out of the back of a van while it was driving along a country road outside Newport.

And it was a lucky escape for 25-year-old driver Sarah Lewis who was driving on Longford Road behind the van and described her shock as she saw seven fridges being thrown towards her.

Obstacle course . . . the road near Newport, littered with illegally dumped fridges

She said one toppled and hit the side of her Mercedes A-Class, which suffered a bump and some scratches, though she was uninjured.

She said: "I was coming up towards Newport and saw some vehicle lights and the van pull out and start driving along the road.

"As I turned into Longford Road, I saw fridges being thrown out the back of the vehicle and then it sped off towards Newport as he was still throwing the fridges out.

"One landed and toppled over on to the side of my car, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Ms Lewis called the police as well as local councillor Peter Scott, who came to help clear the road.

Councillor Scott said: "There is absolutely no excuse for fly tipping in this way. There was a recent very similar incident where a large number of fridges were dumped so I don't know if it was the same people. Traders who collect these items for recycling have to pay to use a recycle centre so rather than pay that fine the occasional person dumps them in the countryside where they think they won't be seen. My message is do not do it because you will be caught and prosecuted without a doubt."

West Mercia Police confirmed they were called to the incident and said any witnesses should call 101, quoting incident 615s of February 12.
