Telford roadworks nearly finished after 18 months
Almost 18 months of congestion for motorists in Telford will come to an end next month with major town centre roadworks set for completion.
The final phase of works to the Box Road in the town centre was beginning today.
The scheme is expected to be finished by the end of March. They are part of the £11.8 million project to improve the roads around the centre of Telford, which includes work to convert the Box Road to two-way traffic to ease access to the centre and make it safer for walkers.
Night-time resurfacing works were beginning today at St Quentin Gate and will last three weeks.
A temporary road closure will be in place along St Quentin Gate between 7pm and 6am, ending on March 9.
That work will be immediately followed by three weeks of overnight resurfacing work at Hollinsgate.
These are expected to be finished by the end of March and will mark the end of major works around the Box Road which started in September 2013.
After this, the only work will be bonding treatment to the central reserves around the Box Road but this cannot be started until warmer weather arrives and council leaders say it will not cause as much disruption as the current works
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said: "I would like to thank everyone for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience."
"I'm delighted that an end to the road works is now in sight and the new two way system in Telford town centre will transform the feel of the town centre help to offer an improved experience for car users, cyclists and pedestrians.
"It will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists and to improve the access to new developments like the town centre ASDA and Southwater One and also Telford Shopping Centre and play an important part in changing the way that view and use the town centre."
