Shropshire Star

Record-low inflation . . . but can you feel the benefit?

Inflation may have fallen in the UK, but people in Shropshire say they have not seen much of a price difference.

However some shoppers admitted that they had managed to save around £20 a week on fuel since petrol prices dropped in recent weeks.

One shopper Denise Grimley, 61, from Leegomery, said she has always managed to get good value for money, which was why she had not noticed a difference.

"I shop around before I buy, so because of that I haven't really noticed a difference with the weekly shop or clothes shopping, but I have noticed a difference in petrol prices.

"I am able to get more for my money when I fill my car up. It is making a big difference because instead of paying £40 a week to fill my tank up, I am spending about £25 which is great. I don't see any of the money I have saved though because it always gets put towards things in the house."

Ben Kay, of Telford, said he had also noticed a difference when he puts petrol in his car.

The 27-year-old added: "I have noticed a difference with fuel, which is great because I drive to and from Wolverhampton every day for work.

"But I haven't really noticed any savings when it comes to anything like food shopping unfortunately."

But mother-of-two Kate Williams, 34, also from Telford, said: "I have made a saving when filling up with petrol, however, I do think the price has gone up again. We are managing to save about £50 a week on fuel though, which is great.

"My husband and I have also started shopping at Aldi rather than Asda, and are now spending about £60 a week on food rather than around £90, which means we can spend more on our daughters."

Robert Tennant, 30, from Shrewsbury, said he has always shopped at Tesco and had noticed a slight difference in food prices.

He added: "Because I am a chef I have always used Tesco as I prefer their food, so I haven't really compared prices, but I have noticed that clothes and petrol prices have dropped.

"I seem to spend more money on clothes for Harley who's two compared to my 11-year-old. But I am making savings when it comes to fuel."

Bryan Pickering, 65, from Trench in Telford, said he and his wife Barbara, 77 had noticed a difference when it comes to getting more for their money.

"We have made quite a bit of savings when it comes to petrol, but haven't noticed it as much when it comes to buying food and clothes.

"But with petrol coming down from about £1.34 to £1.05 it's great and means we have money to spend on other things."

Grandmother Margaret Bowden, 72, from Broseley, said the savings she has made means she had more money to spend on her 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

"I always go to Tesco to get some of my food shop then I go to some of the cheaper shops like Home Bargains, then finish off by going to Morrisons. That way I know I am getting value for money, but I have noticed a difference," she said.

The fall has been welcomed by businesses, particularly those with high expenditure on fuel.

Duncan Richards, owner of Mobile Service Experts in Telford, which has three vans travelling throughout Shropshire carrying out vehicle repairs, said: "We typically spend about £300 a week on fuel, and we are paying about 25 per cent less on fuel now than we were this time last year. So that's a significant saving."

And John Smallman, regional director of National Windscreens and co-owner of branches in Telford, Oswestry and Wolverhampton, said: "

With 16 vans covering hundreds of miles a day, it is great to see fuel prices falling and inflation falling to a record low.

"Inflation levels also have a knock-on effect in general business growth and turnover as if people have more disposable income then they are more likely to be able to afford car repairs and maintenance."
