RenewableUK Cymru, which supports the wind and marine energy sectors in Wales, has offered to give Mr Hague, leader of he House of Commons, a tour of a windfarm to show him how they work.

Mr Hague claimed the UK was "reaching the end of development" for onshore windfarms and called for local people to be more involved in windfarm decisions.

In response, David Clubb, director of RenewableUK Cymru, said: "Perhaps as William finds his feet in Montgomeryshire he will come to realise the huge potential for jobs in an area that has been crying out for just this sort of investment.

"I personally look forward to showing him around some of the area's windfarms so he can come to appreciate the grace and beauty of wind turbines, which are powerful symbols of our shift in Wales to a green economy, and an important contributor to mitigating the damage which will be inflicted on rural Wales by climate change."

Mr Hague made the comments at Welshpool Town Hall on Monday during a public meeting.

"I would like to see decision making for local people in windfarm decisions and these sort of decisions are really important for Mid Wales in the General Election because a Conservative Government will make sure there are no more new subsidies for windfarm projects that are not in the pipeline," he said.

Mr Hague added: "The important thing at UK level is to be clear that we are reaching the end of development of onshore windfarms.

"We need renewable energy but we cannot go along forever like that so it is important to bring an end to new subsidies for windfarms which are not already in the pipeline."
