Video: Red Arrows to get new look before Cosford Air Show appearance

They delight crowds at the Cosford Air Show every year – and now the Red Arrows have been given a new look.

The tail fin on the Hawk jets now bares a design inspired by the Union Jack.

The new look is aimed to represent British excellence and the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team's role as a global ambassador for the UK.

This new design replaces the previous three-stripes livery, which have been on the jets since they were first flown in the 1960s.

Last year, the Lincolnshire-based Red Arrows celebrated their 50th season, performing more than 80 displays across the UK, including at RAF Cosford as well as in nine other countries.

To mark their 50th birthday a special one-off design was also created last year to mark the team's display season.

But instead of returning to this original paint scheme following the season-long 50th pattern, the new Union flag design has become a permanent feature for the much loved fighter jets.

Squadron leader, David Montenegro, said: "This year we have put a new tail fin on the jets which really signifies the next 60 years of the team. This will continue to represent the Red Arrows that perform across the UK.

"The Red Arrows have a major ambassadorial role. When we go abroad, it's not just defence we are representing, or the armed forces in isolation, it's all of the UK's industry.

"To have this ability, to keep spreading the message and promoting the UK in this unique, powerful way around the world, is invaluable."

So far this year it has been announced that an F/A-18C Hornet provided by the Swiss Air Force will perform at the RAF Cosford Air Show on June 14.

The Hornet was designed as a naval fighter with reinforced undercarriage, folding wings and tail-hook, however it is used by many land based air arms across the globe.

Peter Reoch, air show spokesman, said, "The Swiss Hornet Display is likely to be one of the stars of the flying display, and another great attraction for both new and returning visitors to RAF Cosford.

"This is the first time a Hornet has featured in the flying display at RAF Cosford and will hopefully be the first of many international participants at this year's event."

For the first time, tickets for the RAF Cosford Air Show 2015 are advance sale only.
