Traffic fear over walking pizza ads in Telford
A pizza restaurant's latest advertising stunt, which sees staff dancing by the side of the road while wearing huge pizza boxes, could cause a traffic accident, it has been claimed.
Police have received at least one complaint over the Domino's Pizza workers and their advert boards in Oakengates, Hadley, Ketley and Shifnal, with drivers slowing down to look at their antics.
One resident told police it was anti-social behaviour because the sandwich board wearers were shouting "pizza" at the top of their voices to get people's attention.
Resident John Evans, 79, said: "I am not against the people for doing it, but I do think they are a distraction to drivers.
"I drove past one near Oakengates and the young man was dressed in a giant blue box dancing. I slowed down and next thing I know the car behind me was beeping its horn because I'd slowed down. They are a distraction and I have complained to the council."
Telford & Wrekin Council staff have spoken to the pizza chain's area manager. The council's spokeswoman Emily Knightley said: "They are allowed to walk on the pavement with a wobble board but they are not to stand by traffic lights, at junctions or roundabouts. Neither are they allowed to wave or gesticulate to passing traffic.
"The council has spoken to the area manager of Domino's at Madeley to raise our concerns."
But a number of the dancing pizza men have been spotted at roundabouts and junctions across the borough.
Tanya Martin, for Domino's Pizza, said: "A wobble boarder's safety along with that of the general public are a top priority for Domino's franchisees."
