Tributes to walker, 64, who collapsed and died on The Wrekin

Tributes have been paid to a Telford man who collapsed and died during a walk up The Wrekin.

Salvatore Ragonesi, 64, became ill near the summit last Sunday morning. West Midlands Ambulance Service said crews including the Air Ambulance were called at 10.55am but Mr Ragonesi, of Dawley, was dead at the scene.

His younger brother, Eric, said the cause of death was not yet known.

"He basically collapsed," said Mr Ragonesi, a property developer, of Hadnall.

"They thought it was a heart attack but it could have been something else, such as a blood clot.

"There were no warnings," he added.

Mr Ragonesi said Salvatore was one of three brothers and had been an amateur boxer in his youth.

"He was very well-known," he added. "A big character and very well-liked."

Mr Ragonesi, who was known as Sam, is survived by his daughter, Georgina.

His funeral will be held at midday on Saturday, March 14, at St Patrick's RC Church in King Street, Wellington.
