More than 40 people gathered at a meeting in Wem last night to discuss concerns after automatic safety barriers failed to close at the level crossing in Aston Street, last week, despite flashing lights warning of an approaching train.

It was the latest problem at the level crossing which has been mired in controversy since it became automated in October 2013, regularly causing traffic tailbacks.

A petition calling for better safety measures and campaign group - Wem Train Station Safer Group - were launched after the incident.

Network Rail said the barriers did not go down because of a temporary road diversion sign causing an obstruction, and the train went through at a reduced speed.

Resident Melanie Benbow, who organised meeting, said: "I have been a Wem resident now for 34 years and it has come to my attention that all these problems Network Rail are having really is troubling a lot of people.

"We need to join our heads together and come up with some ideas.

"For example a footbridge could be installed or more warning road signs and maybe school visits to make sure our children know exactly what to do if the barriers stay up.

"I am not against it being unmanned as I think we're just moving with the times but I do believe it being the sixth most dangerous station in Shropshire it should have more safety enforcement put in place there.

"I won't stop till Network Rail listen so these people including myself and my children can use it with more reassured ease."

A representative from Network Rail attended the meeting at the White Lion pub to speak to residents.
