Arkadiusz Szostek was more than two times over the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, said a prosecutor at Telford Magistrates Court.

Szostek pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and without insurance in court.

Prosecuting, Mrs Kate Price said the defendant had approached a bend in Dawley Road in Telford near the Church of the Latter Day Saints when he clipped a 'keep left' sign causing his Ford Mondeo to flip on to its roof and cross into the opposite lane, damaging a Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the other direction.

The defendant was spoken to by police officers at the scene of the accident which happened around 7am on February 22 this year, but was only taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, the court was told.

He was banned from driving for 17 months and fined a total of £500 for both offences.

The 29-year-old was also ordered to pay £150 compensation to the Corsa driver and a victim surcharge of £30.

Szostek, from Matlock Avenue, Dawley, Telford, who has lived in the United Kingdom for seven years, was not represented when he appeared in court.

Szostek had told magistrates that he did not drink very often however had taken part in farewell drinks for a work colleague the previous night.

As a result of not being a regular drinker and not eating he got drunk very easily, he said.

"I don't know why I didn't call a taxi.

"When I drink I do stupid things," he told the court. He apologised for his actions.

The court was told that Szostek had been driving his mother's car at the time of the crash and was not insured as she had recently changed her policy.
