Why Welsh welcome wore thin for an all-conquering Shropshire team

They were a Shropshire team which won the Welsh Cup on a historic two occasions.  But there was never to be a third occasion – because the Welsh football authorities thereafter changed the rules.

Now the veterans of that county side which covered itself in glory are coming together for a reunion.

Donnington Wood Football Club became defunct just over 20 years ago, and many of the original players are now in that big playing field in the sky, but the get-together on April 18 will give all those involved with the team over the years a chance to reminisce about the good old days.

Former players Keith, Alan and David

One of those organising it is Keith Sankey of Donnington, who had a part in both those Welsh Cup victories.

"I played in the 1964 team and managed the 1973-74 team. The reunion at Donnington Boxing Club, off Turreff Avenue, at 7.30pm, is for all past Donnington players."

Donnington's victory in the Welsh Cup did not go down well over the border, as it was the first time since 1925 that the silverware had gone to an English club.

"We weren't the best of friends because we weren't Welsh and used to do quite well in it each year and won it on two occasions. It's now called the Welsh Intermediate Cup. In those days it was the Welsh Amateur Cup."

Donnington, who beat Caersws at Newtown in April 1964, were the first Shropshire club to win the cup since Wellington St George's had done so in 1900. But how did Donnington come to enter?

"They wanted the money, I suppose, from the entry fee. We applied, and we were accepted – until we started winning it. The rules were changed." The life of the Donnington Wood Football Club spanned from 1950 to 1994.
