Ex-nurse marks 103rd birthday with Shropshire celebration
A former nurse who moved to Shropshire after travelling the world during the war has marked her 103rd birthday.
Mary Wolfe celebrated the day on March 13 with friends at Stone House residential home, in Bishop's Castle, run by Coverage Care.
Mrs Wolfe grew up in Regina, Canada, but moved to the UK after meeting her husband Edward in Jamaica during the Second World War.
Known to his friends as Gaffer, Mr Wolfe worked as a clerk and account manager in London, where the couple lived for much of their life, raising their children George, Roger, Rosie and Joan.
Daughter Rosie Reid, who runs Old Brick guesthouse in Bishop's Castle, said: "Due to dad's family connections to Shropshire, going generations back, they gravitated to the Bishop's Castle area.
"They moved to Churchstoke and after his passing (in 1984) mum moved to Bishop's Castle in about 1986."
She said she had had a nice day, but there was more to come. "We had lots of people dropping in to say hello and bring flowers.
"But as a family we will be coming together in April to have a second celebration. My son is coming from Canada, and she'll be meeting her grand daughter for the first time," she said.
