Homes to be built on Telford social club site
Nearly 30 affordable homes will be built at the site of what was once one of the oldest civil service clubs in Shropshire.
The former Coddon Sports and Social Club in Wellington Road, Donnington, will be demolished to make way for the homes.
Plans by Wrekin Housing Trust to build 29 houses on the site were approved at a meeting of Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee last night.
The club closed in 2011 and residents have claimed it has become an eyesore and a safety concern.
Councillor Kevin Guy, speaking at the meeting at the Whitehouse Hotel, said: "I think these plans are brilliant. I cannot really fault the application – and I am known for looking for faults in any application."
Councillor Jayne Greenway, member for Lawley and Overdale, said: "I think hooray, we have affordable housing and it is really welcoming to see one-bedroom houses in the application. I know that one-bedroom properties are needed in Telford and I welcome this application."
The housing trust wants 100 per cent of the new homes to be affordable, social rented housing.
In a report to the meeting, planning officer Daniel Owen said the redevelopment of the site would have a "positive impact" on the area.
He denied the development would lead to a detrimental impact on amenities and roads in Donnington.
Outline permission had been granted for the redevelopment of the site for up to 25 homes in May 2012 by Planning Prospects.
