Rescuers were today left scratching their heads over an impressive balancing act which somehow stopped a van involved in an incident near Telford from falling on to its side.

Firefighters from Wellington were called to the scene on the country road near the Mill House, in Walcot.

A parcel delivery van driver had driven up the bank to avoid a head-on collision with a car but the vehicle was left balancing precariously on its two right side wheels.

There were no reported injuries or damage to any of the vehicles.

John Pritchard, Wellington watch manager, said: "There wasn't any damage but the van was left in a precarious position, which the first service recovered at the request of the police and we closed the road for about half an hour.

"The van could not have been left as it was, so we stabilised it and recovered it on to the carriageway and the driver managed to drive it away.

"There was no damage to the car either. It was a very slow incident, the van driver avoided a head- on collision by going on to the bank.

"It had gone on to the bank and was tipping over resting on its two side wheels.

"The laws of physics say it should have tipped over. How it didn't tip over we do not know."
