But Hannah Davies says she was cured by a session with a hypnotist who put her voice loss down to her subconscious.

Hannah, a 21-year-old student from Newtown, came down with the condition in April last year and was told to rest her voice.

Seven months later and she still could not speak, despite in-depth medical examinations which could find no cure.

As a last roll of the dice, she decided to get in touch with hypnotist Phil Collins, who lives near Welshpool.

She said that after just one session of hypnotherapy she regained her voice and believes her mind had blocked her from speaking after the illness.

She said: "I had lost my voice after suffering from laryngitis last April.

"After many visits to the GP for medical examinations, including a camera going down my throat to examine my vocal cords, I was referred to a speech therapist as nothing physical could be found.

"However, the waiting time to see a speech therapist was six months and I needed action quicker than that."

Hannah's mother contacted Mr Collins to ask him if he could help.

After just one session her voice returned to both her and her mother's amazement.

Mr Collins said he initially wasn't sure if he would be able to help as he had never been asked to work on anything similar before.

He said: "After hearing Hannah's story I used hypnosis to suggest to her that she could talk again.

"I said that she would either talk immediately after she came out of the trance state or within a few days following the session.

"When I brought her out of the trance she had a tiny bit of improvement but not enough to say that it had been successful.

"A few days later I received an e-mail from Hannah saying that she had her voice back."

Mr Collins said he believes it was all in Hannah's mind.

He added: "While listening to Hannah's story from her mother during our initial consultation, she said that Hannah's GP had told her not to use her voice as she would lose it.

"I believe that Hannah's subconscious took the literal meaning of what the GP had said, which resulted in her losing her voice for several months following the laryngitis.

"Under hypnosis, I suggested to Hannah's subconscious that the GP had been correct about resting her voice but now that the infection had gone she could allow herself to speak again."

Hannah added: "After a long seven months of no voice, I was starting to lose hope in anything.

"When we went to Phil Collins I had an open mind and was willing to try the hypnosis to see if it would release my voice.

"After a few days I was surprised that I could speak again. I'm very grateful to Phil and would highly recommend if anybody has any problems to contact him with no hesitation."
